On Tuesday, October 1st,
2002 HGTV (Home And Garden Television) visited Ken
Schaffer to interview, film and preview his collection
for their new series titled “Ultimate Collectors”.
The focus of this segment will highlight Ken’s
collection of original 50s & 60s memorabilia
and the pop culture aspect of his collection.
The show will air on Wednesday
evening, January 15, 2003 at 10:30p.m. EST and
will repeat January 16, 2003 at 1:30a.m (West
Coast 7:30 & 10:30 PST). It will be broadcast
nationally and features popular comedian and New
York television host Kevin Flynn, Ken and his
nephew, Kevin Flatley.
According to Ken, “This
should bring a tremendous amount of exposure to
gameroomconnection.com,” referring to this
collector’s site. “As a hobby, Americana
and pop culture are timeless. The most exciting
part of the hobby is the enjoyment that can be
shared among all generations. It’s great
to be able to recreate themes from our childhood
and beyond and share those memories with others.
Two of the most common things I hear are “I
played (or remember) that game…” or
“My (Mother, Father, grandparents, etc)
had one exactly like that.” Ken adds, “It’s
great to see a father and son compete on an old
1960s pitch & bat machine or see mom challenge
the kids to a game of Ms. Pacman, while listening
to oldies on an authentic vintage jukebox.”
The Gameroom hobby includes
advertising, memorabilia, coin-op, and vintage
arcade items. The hobby that has grown immeasurably
in recent years and much of it’s growth
can be attributed to national shows such as the
semi-annual Chicagoland Show held each Spring
and Fall, Atlantique City, also held twice a year
in Atlantic City, NJ, and numerous regional shows
throughout the nation. The advent of online forums
such as eBay and collector’s publications
such as “Gameroom Magazine” have also
helped bring the hobby to the mainstream by allowing
collectors to share information and buy and sell
their niche collectibles.
Please be sure to check
back and tune in as Ken shares his experiences
and collection on HGTV. Here’s a sneak preview
of the interview and filming. Hope to see you
in January…
